JOIN OUR TALK WITH DR KEN COURTENAY ON 6 JULY |
The EPA Early Career Psychiatrists Committee has teamed up with the EPA Section on Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities for the fourth Online Talks with Experts session, to be held on Thursday 6 July.
Dr Ken Courtenay, who has more than twenty years’ experience working with people with intellectual disabilities in the UK as a consultant psychiatrist, will speak on the topic ‘Mental Health in Intellectual Disability’. This 1-hour exchange will start with a short presentation followed by a Q&A session. The talk will explore clinical presentations, assessment, and treatment of mental disorders in people with intellectual disabilities outlining the specific skills that a psychiatrist can develop to support people with ID. GET READY TO SUBMIT ABSTRACTS FOR EPA 2024
The plans for EPA 2024 are in progress, with the submission period for abstracts opening soon. Abstracts may be submitted for the Oral Communication Session, E-Poster Presentation or E-Poster Viewing. The Scientific Committee will determine whether the abstract will be accepted for presentation, with consideration given to the author’s preference. Stay tuned for more news in due course. The EPA Committee on Ethical Issues will hold a webinar on ‘Implementing alternatives to coercion in psychiatric practice’ on Wednesday 19 July.
Chaired by Meryam Schouler-Ocak (Germany) and Silvana Galderisi (Italy), the webinar will examine coercion as a complex phenomenon and the legal and ethical requirements for the use of coercion in psychiatry. Speakers will include Péter Kéri (Hungary), István Gallai (Hungary), Silvana Galderisi (Italy), Gil Salzman (Israel), and Meryam Schouler-Ocak (Germany). The EPA welcomes the new EU Commission comprehensive approach to Mental Health, released on 7 June 2023.
Mental illnesses are increasing in Europe and worldwide and are among the leading causes of disability and detrimental effects on society, individuals and families in all areas of life. The EPA values this comprehensive approach as timely and believes it constitutes a step forward for making mental health care a priority at national and EU level. |
TAKE PART IN THE EPA AMBASSADORS SURVEY 2023!
The EPA has launched the fourth edition of its Ambassadors Programme. Started in 2020, this initiative aims at establishing a database of information on mental health practices, featuring perspectives from around Europe and from within different mental health disciplines. This year’s questionnaire focuses on Schizophrenia spectrum disorders. It takes around 25 minutes to complete: fill it in now and share your views and experience on the topic. |
EPA ENDORSES EBC ‘PLEDGE FOR SCIENCE BRAIN RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN THE EU’
In light of recent policy developments, the European Brain Council (EBC), together with its members and and like-minded organisations, has launched a Pledge for Science.
The Pledge calls upon national, EU and international policymakers to support Brain Research and Innovation, combining research and public health initiatives to address brain function and disorders in a comprehensive, collaborative and innovative way.
